What makes Academy of BioScience unique?

  • SCIENCE FAIR -
  • All students in grades 4-8 participate in our annual science fair, with the option of advancing to the regional science fair.
  • PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS OF LEARNING (PPL) - 3 times per year, all students participate in an evening event showcasing something they have learned in school.
  • J-TERM AND M-TERM - One week in January and (due to its popularity with staff and students) now one week in May, students work with a teacher in a small group for a whole week. During this week, groups focus on special research topics of interest to the students. Past topics have included: So You Want To Be a Veterinarian, Wolf Ecology, Natural Disasters, and Marine Biology. These weeks end with a PPL presentation on Friday night.
  • EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM - During the last hour of our school day (not after school), ABS offers classes to either give extra instruction to struggling students, or provide enrichment opportunities for students in areas of academic strength.

Academy of BioScience Curriculum

The Academy of BioScience uses the Core Knowledge sequence and our staff is trained annually by the Minnesota Humanities Commission. ABS teaches all core academic areas (mathematics, language arts, social studies, and science) using the Minnesota state standards and the Core Knowledge sequence. ABS also provides physical and health education to all students. All students at Academy of BioScience receive Spanish instruction. For further information, please see the curriculum links to the left or contact the school with specific questions.

The Academy of BioScience also offers enrichment courses or academic interventions for students above or below grade level.

The Academy of BioScience is sponsored by Friends of Ascension, the TCF Bank Foundation.

Student and School Assessment

ABS students are assessed 3 times annually using the NWEA Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests in Mathematics, Reading, General Science, and Concepts & Processes.

ABS is a public charter school and is held to the same expectations as traditional public districts. Our students are assessed using the MCA II Assessments and ABS is given a school report card. Our school report card is available on the MN Dept. of Education website.

Academy of BioScience teachers meet monthly to discuss data (classroom data as well as standardized test data). These discussions lead to more informed instruction for our classrooms to help ensure that each student's academic needs are met.
