May Term
May Term, our spring version of J-term, will take place May 12-16. The class offerings are as follows.
1. Outdoor Pursuits
Mr. Deboer and Mrs. Anderson
Plan for and pack for a very adventurous camping trip to the Winona, MN area for a two night, three day stay. Students will experience geocaching, mapping, canoeing, leaving no trace behind, and wilderness survival.
Monday – Introduction, planning, job designation, and discussion at school.
Tuesday – GPS into and practice, tent practice, pack, and food prep at school.
Wednesday – Depart ABS, stop at historic site, picnic lunch, set up campsite.
Thursday – Canoeing, geocaching, observations, dinner, games.
Friday – Pack up campsite, depart for ABS, prepare PPL at school.
2. Hands – On Physics
Ms. Winter and Mrs. Sitts
Join us in learning Newton's laws and how forces affect motion. After students learn the concepts they will put them in practice making cars and rockets. We will also be making some models of bungee jumping and making many things fly through the air.
Monday – Assemble and race balloon cars, CO2 cars at school.
Tuesday – Sand and paint CO2 cars, bungee jumping, popsicle building at school.
Wednesday – Rockets;make mini-rockets, design, build, and launch bigger rockets at school.
Thursday – Test your aim at an Archery Range and your swing at Mini-Golf.
Friday – Final CO2 car race, slinky activities and prepare PPL at school.
3. Art, Art, and more Art with nature
Ms. Eng and Ms. Palmer
Enjoy a week of non-stop art. Students will use recyclable materials and materials from nature to create many art projects. A trip to the Minneapolis Art Institute is planned including a picnic lunch. Get prepared for your own Art Gallery opening night as your PPL.
Monday – Nature walks to collect, research artwork/artists, paper making, art projects at school.
Tuesday – Museum trip to Minneapolis Art Institute, picnic lunch, nature drawing, art projects at school, outside walk for photography.
Wednesday – Make your own music instrument, tessellations, papier-mâché, and art at school.
Thursday – Movie making, windstorms, jewelry, nature walks, art projects.
Friday – Finish all projects and prepare PPL for grand opening of Gallery.
4. Flight
Mr. Pickerell
Spend a week learning about flight and discover how birds and insects fly. Create some different air crafts, learn about propulsion, aerodynamics, pressure, gases, forces, and students will even create their own ROCKETS!
Monday – Students will learn about the history and chemistry of flight , construct and fly hot air balloons at school.
Tuesday – Air foils, Bernoulli’s principle, paper airplanes at school.
Wednesday – Air foils, more paper airplanes, maneuverability, PPL prep at school.
Thursday – Propulsion, force, rubber band planes, balloons, film canisters, PPL prep at school.
Friday – Rockets, cold war history, gravitational acceleration, launch rockets in park, PPL at school.
5. Children’s books…not just for little kids
Mrs. Touchet
Turn on your creative side with a look at picture books. We will analyze picture books; examine what makes a story and how illustrations add to the story. After we learn what makes a good children's book we will write, illustrate and publish our own books.
Monday – Book survey, research, make first book at school.
Tuesday – Favorite book, alphabet book at school.
Wednesday – Three Little Pigs, create rough draft, edit at school.
Thursday – Create illustrations for book and book jacket at school.
Friday – Final touches and book assembly, finish PPL at school.
6. Nature
Ms. Servaty
Join us for daily observations outside dealing with living things and the environment, studying populations, and analyzing interactions among living things. Students will also be studying ecosystems and biomes, energy flow in ecosystems and cycles of matter. A trip to the Como Zoo is planned to provide students with an opportunity to observe animals at the zoo and plants in the Conservatory. Students will complete this class with their minds full of knowledge from all the nature around us.
Monday – Observation notebooks, research on animals and environment at school.
Tuesday – Research, observe outside, energy flow, ecosystems at school.
Wednesday – Como Zoo field trip and gather information for PPL.
Thursday – Choose topic, environment kits, zoo information to use, PPL prep at school.
Friday – Finish all observations; finish PPL for presentation at school.
7. Salt and water
Mr. Obiadazie
Compare the economic and social benefits to New Brighton of using salt versus snow tires. Discover the physical and chemical changes from snow and salt. Take a trip to the New Brighton City Council Office and learn all about it.
Monday – Research and gain information, brain storm session at school.
Tuesday – Visit New Brighton City Council, gain information at school.
Wednesday – School investigation, hands on activities with salt and ice at school.
Thursday – Data analysis, theoretical expectations and predictions, PPL prep.
Friday – Finalize PPL at school. |
